Downhill Mountain Biking

Pardon the delay in making another post! The technology situation has made it difficult, with two power outages in a week, and unreliable satellite based WiFi. We're back in the bigger city of Cusco now, so time to catch up.

Over a week ago, we went on a day tour via downhill mountain biking. Frank was a maniac, and earned the admiration of our twenty-something guide, Irvine. Dawn did great too! There were plunging dropoffs to the valleys far below the narrow trails, sharp declines, deep ruts and hairpin turns. I seemed to be able to manage two of those factors at a a time; otherwise, I was walking my bike. I have always figured it would be too scary a sport for me, and now that has been confirmed!

Still, the experience was pretty amazing, travelling through isolated high - altitude farmlands.

We saw two amazing Inca sites, too. Moray is a series of huge, circular agricultural terraces. Scientists think it was an experimental site, where Incans could study the effects of different temperatures and sun exposures on various strains of crops. Imagine: 600 years ago, when Europe was just starting to recover from the Dark Ages, they were doing research!

The other place we saw that day was Salineras. This is a terraced salt production site, and the evaporation and refining process is the same now as it was in the 1400s.

Our next post will be a long one, so I'll keep this one mercifully short!

Wendy, for Dawn and Frank
